Minesweeper is a logic game played on a hidden grid. Some squares contain mines, while every other square is safe. Reveal a safe square and it shows how many mines touch it, counting the eight neighboring positions around its sides and corners. Use those numbers together, mark the places that must contain mines, and uncover every safe square to win.
No guessing is needed to understand the rules, but solving a board well takes observation and patience. A 1 beside one covered square identifies a mine. A completed group of flags can make its remaining neighbors safe. Larger patterns connect across the field, so information from one edge of an opening often unlocks another. The challenge is to turn each local clue into a reliable next step without revealing a mine.
This version includes the three classic board sizes: Beginner has a 9 by 9 grid with 10 mines, Intermediate has a 16 by 16 grid with 40 mines, and Expert has a 30 by 16 grid with 99 mines. Most Minesweeper reasoning begins with two checks. First, if a number has exactly as many covered neighbors as mines still missing around it, all of those covered neighbors are mines. For example, an unsatisfied 2 touching only two covered squares proves that both squares should be flagged. This is sometimes called the all-mines rule.
Second, if a number already touches the correct number of flags, every other covered neighbor is safe. A 2 beside two known mines has no additional danger around it. Reveal the other neighbors or chord the 2. Scan repeatedly for these two situations because every new reveal can create another certain move nearby.
When no single number gives an answer, compare two numbers whose neighborhoods overlap. Suppose one clue needs one mine among two covered squares and a nearby clue needs one mine among those same two squares plus a third. The extra third square must be safe. Subtracting the shared group turns a crowded edge into a small, understandable relationship.
The familiar 1-2-1 edge pattern is one example, but memorizing shapes is less reliable than understanding why they work. Mark which covered squares belong to both clues and which belong to only one. Compare the number of mines each clue still needs after accounting for flags. This method scales to corners, irregular openings, and expert boards where the textbook pattern may be rotated or partly hidden.
A flag does not make a square a mine; it records your conclusion. Place one only when the surrounding clues prove it. Speculative flags can corrupt several nearby calculations at once, and a chord beside a wrong flag may reveal the real mine immediately. If a deduction seems to contradict another number, remove the uncertain flag and recount from the beginning.
The mine counter is an estimate based on the number of flags placed, not an independent clue about whether those flags are correct. It can reach zero while a mine remains unmarked if another safe square was flagged by mistake. Trust the numbered grid first. Use the counter as a planning aid and as a final check on boards where every flag has been logically established.
Useful information lives along the border between revealed and covered squares. Long stretches of unopened grid away from all numbers cannot yet be solved locally, so clicking there adds risk without using the clues you already earned. Follow the active boundary and look for numbers with the fewest unknown neighbors or the most confirmed flags.
Large blank openings are valuable because they expose a broad boundary at once. After an opening expands, scan its corners and narrow pockets before moving to the longest edge. Corners often constrain a clue to only one or two covered squares, which can start a deduction chain that travels around the whole cleared area.
Chording is the fastest way to play a solved section. It can reveal several safe squares, expand blank areas, and expose fresh clues with one action. Before activating a number, recount its neighboring flags and confirm how each was proved. The matching quantity is not enough if one of the marked locations came from a guess.
On a crowded Expert board, it can be safer to reveal one known-safe neighbor before chording the rest. That new clue may confirm the flag pattern or expose an inconsistency without opening every square at once. Speed comes from accurate decisions and smooth scanning, not from using the largest possible action at every opportunity.
Some generated positions can reach a point where the visible clues do not distinguish between two or more mine arrangements. Before accepting that a guess is necessary, inspect the entire boundary, subtract overlapping sets, and include the number of mines not yet accounted for. A deduction on the opposite side of the board may provide the missing information.
If uncertainty remains, choose a square with the lowest supported risk and the highest chance of revealing useful space. A square that participates in fewer possible mine arrangements is better than a blind corner, and opening access to a large untouched region may be more valuable than resolving a tiny pocket. Treat the outcome as probability management, not a claim that one square was logically safe.
Beginner boards are small enough to recount every clue carefully. Use them to practice the all-mines and all-safe rules, deliberate flagging, and safe chords. Aim for consistent wins before chasing the timer. A fast result built on uncertain clicks teaches less than a slower solve where every move has a reason.
Intermediate introduces longer boundaries and deductions that connect across several clues. Expert adds density, width, and more opportunities to lose track of a flag's justification. Break the Expert field into visible regions, finish certain chains before switching areas, and use the keyboard or zoom-friendly mobile controls to keep your place without sacrificing accuracy.
Once the basic deductions feel automatic, scan in a steady loop: completed numbers for safe chords, constrained numbers for forced mines, then overlapping pairs for subtraction. This order catches simple moves before you spend time on a complex pattern. It also reduces unnecessary pointer travel because one correct action often resolves the next clue in the same area.
Keyboard play can make that loop more precise. Move focus with the arrow keys. Enter or Space reveals a covered square or chords an eligible number, F toggles a flag, H requests a hint, and N starts a new game. On touch screens, use the visible Reveal and Flag modes when a long press would feel uncertain. The best control method is the one that makes your intention obvious before the square changes.
